Fight For This (For This #1)

FightforThis-f

Release Date 31st January 2020

Grey and Si have been dancing around one another for months.
Grey’s helpless attraction to fairies (and one fairy in particular) is a source of endless frustration—but as his energy can damage a fairy’s glamour, he can’t let himself get close.
Si is different to other fairies and he’s wearing down Grey’s defences. When Si discovers the Veil is thinning around the school where they both work—putting the students and teachers there at risk from detection—he needs Grey’s help to fix it.
Problem is, Si isn’t a true fairy, he’s just a magical mistake. For as long as he can remember all his glamour has done is messed up and broken stuff. Though Grey maybe older and wiser about a lot of things in the human world, he’s pretty clueless about all things magical. He doesn’t even know the Veil exists until Si knocks himself unconscious trying to save Grey’s reputation after a night out.
But it’s funny how mistakes work out. Even funnier how trusting one another can help even the most impossible events turn out all right.

But it’s funny how Jam’s little brother, Benji, seems to know exactly what Alfie needs. For the past twelve months Alfie has thrown himself into his job and tried hard not to think about beautiful punk-loving Benji—tried not to see how the sweet kid he used to look out for, and who used to trail so adoringly after him, has grown up into a big lad with an even bigger heart. As Alfie sobers up, he begins to see things with a new perspective, and Benji has his full attention.
If only Alfie can admit what it is he wants.

When fifteen-year-old Romeo’s mother leaves one day and doesn’t return, he finds himself homeless and trying to survive on the streets. Mute and terrified, his silence makes him vulnerable, and one night he is beaten by a gang of other kids, only to be rescued by a boy who pledges to take care of him.

Julian is barely two years older than Romeo. A runaway from an abusive home, he has had to make some difficult choices and sells himself on the street to survive. Taking care of Romeo changes him, gives him a purpose in life, gives him hope, and he tries to be strong and keep his troubles with drugs behind him. But living as they do is slowly destroying him, and he begins to doubt he can be strong enough.

This is the story of their struggle to find a way off the streets and stay together at all costs. But when events threaten to tear them apart, it is Romeo who must find the strength within himself to help Julian (and not let their love story turn into a Shakespearean tragedy).

Honorable mentions for This is Not a Love Story from this year’s Rainbow Awards (2014)

“Hard topic beautifully written. This is a love story that works on many levels–it’s true to life, tough, harsh, and yet hopeful. It made me think, but most importantly it made me feel. A marvelous debut novel.”

“This is truly a gripping story of teenagers—one mute with an artistic gift, one damaged inside but with a beautiful  spirit—but this is NOT a teenage story.  There are tears, abuse, homelessness, grief, loss, more loss, and then. .  .well, it is not a love story, but it IS a story about love.  And sacrifice.  And where home really is.”

“I just couldn’t find anything that didn’t deserve the highest rating. This is a book that will stay long with you after you finished reading it. Usually I am not such a happy end person, but for these characters I desperately needed a happy end – anything else would have been devastating. Luckily I have no experience with homelessness, but to me the descriptions of their struggles felt real and I was caring deeply for the characters – not only for the main characters Romeo and Julian, but also for the ones they meet on their way. Books like these are the reason why I love participating in the Jury of the Rainbow Awards so much, because I don’t know if I would have otherwise found and read this book.”

Raw, painful, sometimes difficult to read but also fully engaging in its characters and their struggles.

This book captivated me from the first page. The writing, characterization and plot drew me in and kept me invested until the very last page. I loved this book.

I really enjoyed “This Is Not a Love Story.” It was the first Harmony Ink Press book I read, and it introduced me to “The Glass House” and “Slaying Isidore’s Dragons.” Both really good reads. Thanks for writing! ♥
